Choosing A Good Domain Name (URL) And Getting A Hosting Account!

I wanted to give you information regarding choosing your domain name, and I also want to re-emphasize some of the more important points of previous lessons.

I do want to point that you need to have CHOSEN YOUR TARGET MARKET in order to understand what you would pick for your domain name, and that information is in the previous messages.

But at this point in time, you’ve decided on a target market. You’ve researched the main points of your target market that were explained in that section.

I’m not going to repeat them here, but make sure that you have done your research on your target market and you feel it will work for you – FOR YOU, all right?

There is a human element to the target market, and that is explained in detail in the section on choosing your target market.

Now, for the domain name, the basic things you want to be thinking about is to have a "Keyword Phrase," ideally in the very front of the domain name.

Examples:

For this set of examples I, Justin Bake, used just my initials, my first name, my first name preceded by the word "by," plus with and without hyphens, depending on the look I want and how short I want it

internetmarketingjb

internet-marketing-jb

internetmarketingjustin

internet-marketing-justin

internetmarketingbyjustin

internet-marketing-by-justin

Using my full name as in: internet-marketing-by-justin-blake, is almost adding too many words that are not part of the keyword phrase.

I would consider my full name:  internet-marketing-by-justin-blake, if I was thinking of 'branding' or maybe for you, if you already have a business, you would want the URL:

YOURBUSINESSNAME.COM  for example and then you could also have a site:

KEYWORDPHRASEYOURBUSINESSNAME.COM

There are many more examples through out the text on this page

When you go to search for and register a domain, you are going to find a lot of times the domain name you want is already taken.

One of the examples I use is "Dog Training." And it’s already taken, so what are you going to do? Well, that’s where you go to using what we call "Other Words, " or "Auxiliary Words."

These are words like: "ways," "here," "hq," "byYOURFIRSTNAME," "byYOURINITIALS," "byYOURNICKNAME," "site," "101," "abc," "haven," "info" etc.

They are not part of any keyword phrase but when you search for them there is a good chance you will find the domain available

For example:

DogTrainingWays

DogTrainingHere

DogTrainingHQ
(which would stand for headquarters to most people)

DogTrainingByJoe, ByFred, ByJane, ByDonna – something that comes after the keyword phrase that you can add on that makes sense, has human appeal, and yet you have your keyword phrase upfront so the search engines will see it.

Your Domain Is Important To The Search Engines

That’s Why You Want That Keyword Phrase In There

And You Ideally Want That Keyword Phrase At The Front

The domain is also going to tell somebody, a human being looking at it, what your site is about.

Now, if it’s DogTrainingByJoe.com, they’re going to figure the site’s about dog training, and it should be.

Again, most of the time you’ll have your keyword phrase in front.

For something that’s very, very competitive, like weight loss, obviously WeightLoss.com is going to be taken. But you’ll notice that, when searching for something like weight loss, that there is actually words and phrases that rank very high, that have a lot of searches for that exact phrase –  they’ll be in like the top ten phrases searched. You know, like weight loss, weight loss tips, quick weight loss, weight loss program, weight loss fast, fast weight loss.

You can do a quick search for "weight loss" using this free keyword tool:
Click Here For A Free Keyword Tool

There is a section below where I put the minimum number of searches at 60 to 70 per day but that is not something set in stone, there can be a variation on that

And what you want to do with WeightLoss - since the domain will be taken - you can use those extra words. You can say like, "weight loss tips" is ranked high, "quick weight loss" is ranked high, so you might look for "QuickWeightLossTips."

Make sense?

In this instance, you’re actually going to put a word in front of the main keyword phrase, only because it is a very commonly searched, highly searched total keyword phrase, when the phrase is viewed a a whole .

All right, most of the time you wouldn’t, but there are exceptions.

And you know, it might be QuickWeightLossFast – that would be another one you could use. But I just wanted to point out that, there’s always going to be exceptions to the rules. You know, another one was – an example was with tea, like drinking tea. And the domain was TeaCompany, and it was The Tea Company.com that looked and seemed the best even though the word "The" was in front of the keyword "Tea."

You know, do they want to use TeaCompany.com or have TheTeaCompany.com? Especially if TeaCompany was taken, The – having the word T-H-E in front of TeaCompany is not really that bad of a thing and that’s a nice domain for human beings – TheTeaCompany.com.

All right, so hopefully this will add to what you’ve already read and what you’ll see on the videos as far as choosing your domain.

And you know, I do again want to point out that...

Your Domain Is Not Going To Make Or Break You.

There are a lot of factors that go into getting a webpage ranked high and returned in a high position in the search results

The point I want to get across is there are many, many, factors that Google looks at so don't have a nervous breakdown when you go to choose your domain name

Right now go search in Google for Internet Marketing WITHOUT quotes and see how many of the top 10 and top 20, the first two pages of the search results returned, see how many of those websites have the phrase "Internetmarketing" in their domain

Search for with quotes as: "internetmarketing"

Do the same for your target market, your topic for your business

Example: search for "YOUR TOPIC" with or without the quotes and look at the domains that show

So just, you know, get a good one. Try to get the keyword phrase in front. Play around with the words after.

And again, I went through where there can be an exception for something like weight loss. And we do have a list of what we call other words or auxiliary words, as well.

CLICK HERE For A List Of "Auxiliary Words"

Long Vs Short

Now, you do want to keep the domain relatively short. You can’t keep it as short as you used to be as a lot of those domain names have been taken.

But Google, the main "Search Engine" doesn’t put anywhere near the weight or the value on a short domain versus a long domain as it used to.

Ideally, you want to see if you can keep it short, but with the advent of the fact that the internet is highly competitive, people are putting up sites – thousands of sites a day, your domain might end up being three, four, five words, 30-35 characters.

Don’t worry about that. It won’t really hurt you at all.

But there’s still the idea of, if you can, make it short. But it really doesn’t count that much as far as Google views it.

And the reason I can’t give you a definite – what effect does it have, is nobody really knows Google’s algorithm, how Google really, truly views things. We have good ideas on some things and hazy ideas on others and tremendous controversy on a lot of it. Plus, Google changes the nuances on a regular basis so you can just focus on the big things.

So don’t worry if you have InternetMarketingStrategiesByJustin – that would be a good domain name. I wouldn’t hesitate using that domain name.

InternetMarketingStrategiesByJustin - would be 34 characters in length. If I’m using hyphens – Internet-Marketing-Strategies-By-Justin – it’s going to add four more characters. It’s going to be 38 characters in length.

Which bring us to the point of...

Whether Or Not To Use Hyphens

Google does not discriminate in any way, shape, or form when you use a hyphen(s).

REMEMBER! We Are Working In A Visual Medium!

We Are Marketing On The Internet!

A Hyphen Actually Makes It Simpler And Easier,
In My Opinion, Big Time, To Actually Be Able
To Read A Domain, Understand What It’s About,
And To Be Able To Remember That Domain!

People say, “Well, they won’t remember that it’s using hyphens.” I think they will, because what they’re going to do is, when they think of it, they’re going to picture it in their mind, all right? They are going to be READING the domain NOT HEARING it!

The big knock on domains goes back to the old days when the internet was just starting out and people were talking about domain names on the radio or on television and, you know, if you had InternetMarketingStrategiesByJustin.com, that was cool as you would just rattle of the word making up your domain name

But if you had to say “Internet hyphen Marketing hyphen Strategies hyphen By hyphen Justin dot com,” for the domain Internet-Marketing-Strategies-By-Justin.com that was considered to be bad. Of course, you could always by both domains since they're relatively cheap and just direct visitors from one to the main site.

Well, two things – one, we’re working in basically a VISUAL MEDIUM! PEOPLE READING WRITTEN CONTENT (Or viewing a video).

100% of our internet marketing techniques are all visual medium on the internet – people reading words, looking at words on their computer screen, plus maybe some video, okay?

The knock against hyphens comes from having to verbally tell someone your domain. If I’m on the radio – and very few of you are ever actually going to get on the radio – you might – but we are basically working a visual medium. So don’t worry about using a hyphen, all right?

And two: VERY IMPORTANT! Hyphens give you more flexibility in getting the domain you want. You know, let's say your target market is "Tropical Fish." Well, "TropicalFishHaven" might be taken, but Tropical-Fish-Haven.com, using hyphens, might not be.

And that would give you – like I said, you get more opportunity to get the domain you want, the keyword phrase you want and be able to keep it relatively short.

".com" | ".info" | ".net" | ".biz" | ".org"

So that brings us to the extensions, what’s called the TLD extension. TLD is "top level domain," but there’s .com, there’s .net, .info, .biz, .org – all sorts of them, .edu. (Just so you know, with .edu, education, you cannot get unless you are an accredited university.)

Since .com stands for commercial, we tell you, if you can, get the ".com."

The reason is that is what most people are used to and still think of so when they remember your domain they might, that is might, forget that it was "yourdomain.net" and go to "yourdomain.com"

However for the search engines, as far as how Google views a .com versus a .net or a .info, this has changed quite a bit over the last few years. For the TLD extension – Google puts very little weight right now on whether or not a ".com" domain is used versus a ".net" domain for example, whether or not a .com domain is better than a .net or a .info domain

The Understanding Is There Is Very Little Difference In How Google
Views The TLD Extensions ".com" | ".info" | ".net" | ".biz" | ".org"

It Does Not "Penalize" a Domain Because It Ends In ".net" or ".info" or ".org"

So if you know you want something and the .com is taken, you can go for the .net or .info or .org

Also, I Want To Point Out That " .org " Dot O-R-G, Has An Interesting Thing About It.

I’m not sure if it was the original intent, but it was designed, I’ve heard but I am not sure on this, to be for organizations – it stands for organization - and was designed to be for "Nonprofit Organizations."

However, you can commercially use a .org.

The interesting thing is, from a human perspective, if somebody sees something that says “.org,” the average tendency is to give more credibility to that site because it just seems more official – it’s some sort of organization. And some people will think it is a nonprofit.

But people just seem to put more value in their mind to something that is .org because it used to be something like the HeritageFoundation.org or whatever, something like that.

So from the human standpoint, if I couldn’t get the .com, I would probably get a .org at this point, because it just the way people seem to view it and the fact that, as I said, Google does not really discriminate that much when it comes to the extension, the .com, the .net, the .info, the .biz.

And the reason I point out the .org is because of the human factor in people viewing it, a lot of people viewing it as being more – much more legitimate, all right?

So again, the idea is: keyword phrase up front, use hyphens if you want, try to keep it short – don’t worry if it gets a little long. I went over the extensions, the TDL;s like the .com and .net.

I also talked about adding the "Other Word(s)" or "Auxiliary Word(s)" afterwards, the auxiliary word after your keyword phrase, to give you options on obtaining the keyword phrase you want upfront with a domain name that is still available for you to purchase and register.

And I talked how you can (This is shown on the videos!) you can play with it and find one that you like that is available.

You have access to the free keyword tool. I just want to go back slightly and make sure it shows sufficient interest by the number of searches they’re going to show. BUT! remember, the keyword tools we give you, such as the WordTracker free keyword tool – it’s more done for a relative thing.

And there is a video on picking a site – I believe it was Natural Weight Loss Naturally or Naturally Healthy Weight Loss – the video is here below. Where I point to make sure it does show sufficient searches, but also you might have focused target market with less searches but also less competition for you to be competing against

If you put your keyword phrase in the free keyword tracker and it comes up that it shows, for example,  seven searches – which is per day – then you really want to think about getting another target market, because there just doesn’t seem to be a high enough interest, all right? Keep that in mind!!!

The other thing is, like I mentioned earlier, go ahead and search for your topic, put in your keyword phrase, and see what other people are using for domains. See how many of the websites that appear on the first page, the top 10, and on the second page, the top 11 through 20 – see how many of those domains actually have the keyword phrase in it. You’ll be surprised at how many do not have the keyword phrase in it. Again, your domain is not going to make or break your business, okay?

When you’re searching for domains, realize too, that with the internet being around now for, I don’t know, 15 years or so there are people that have started 10+ years ago. They have a site, and Google counts how long a site has been in existence as one of the factors in determining how much more authority, or importance, to give that site

But also, people that have had these websites for 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 years, even 5 years – okay, they’ve had a lot of time to develop links, to get a lot of content on that site.

So keep that in mind that when it comes to something like weight loss or internet marketing, you’re not necessarily going to break into them very easily. However, you do want your site to have the keyword phrase in the domain.

BUT! that’s why we talk about the advantage of using a blog in a upcoming message, where you have the ability to take an individual blog page and make it rank very high for a long tail keyword phrase.

And this will all be covered in upcoming messages, but I just want to point out,  I want you to understand...

THE INTERNET IS SO HUGE

Through the search engines alone, (NOT! counting people going directly to YouTube, Article Directory Sites, Blog Directory Sites, other Web 2.0 Sites to get the information they are looking for.) there’s like...

10 BILLION SEARCHES A MONTH

That's BILLION with a "B."

And as I l already pointed out, other people ignore the search engines because they don’t like the results they return. I’m not too happy with Google. Some people go to article sites to go to information. Some people go to YouTube or a blog directory or website directory to get information, because they want to see a video or that’s just where they go to get their information.

So besides the 10 billion searches, you’ve got to figure there’s 1, 2, maybe 3 more or 4 more billion searches being done on other sites that are not search engines by people looking for information on the internet.

You only need a little sliver of that big Internet pie to have it add up to thousands of dollars a month

So Give People Good, Valid Information!

They And The Search Engines Will Love You For It!

One more example of where you would put a word in front of the keyword phrase is “free internet marketing course,” because that’s a popular term. The keyword phrase is NOT "free internet marketing course,” even though that is a popular enough keyword phrase to use, it really is "internet marketing course” with the word "free' put in front of it.

Now, I want to point out a couple of examples that recently came to light that hopefully will help you, a few of you, who have different types of, or somewhat unusual, target markets.

And hopefully it won’t confuse you, but one of the examples that came up was "ecological footprint." (I try to use somewhat unusual topics as this really give you an idea of how to research for a good keyword phrase for your domain. This way most of you will find it much simpler by comparison)

And we came up with ideas like, “ecological footprint reduce yours now,” “ecological footprint 101,” with or without hyphens.

But the person said, “I want to sell eco-friendly products.” Okay, now to me that changes a lot of things!

Follow the thought process here. Now, when we searched for "ecological footprint" and compared the number of searches it was getting with "eco-friendly products," "eco-friendly products" was getting much more searches, getting more searches than “ecological footprint.”

So I’m Saying, Look, There’s Two Things You Want To Consider Here

First off is that “eco-friendly products” is getting more searches than “ecological footprint.”

The other thing is that a person looking up information on their ecological footprint might be because they want to purchase products, products that are ecological-friendly, and they want information on how to, you know, do things or get things that are ecologically friendly.

But a person looking for the ecological footprint could be just somebody doing research of any type at all from personal use to a paper for school. They just want to find something out, somebody just wondering is their carbon dioxide really adding to global warming or not.

I mean, in other words, there are a lot of people going to the site who are not interested really in buying something. They just want information.

Now What You Are Going To Do With Your Domain Is Provide People With Good, Valuable Information. (The Lesson On Blogs Will Explain That)

So Then When They Click On A Link To A Product Or Service You Offer, That They’re Sufficiently Impressed By What You Have Shown Them So Far – The Information You’ve Given So Far - That You’ve Added Credibility To The Product Or Service You’re Offering That They Just Clicked On A Link To.

Thus It Is More Likely They Will Purchase - They Will Buy That Product Or Service - And You Will Make Money.

But “Eco-Friendly Products” Actually Would Be More Focused, In The Sense That These Are People That Are Seriously Looking To Buy!

They Are Not Just Surfing The Internet Killing Time. They Have Focused Their Search To A More Specific Search Phrase.

If I’m Looking To Buy An Eco-friendly Product, I’m Much More Likely
To Use A Keyword Search Term That Is More Similar To The Phrase, “Eco-Friendly Products,” Or “Ecologically Friendly Product,” Rather
Than “Ecological Footprint.”

So there’s two reasons then to say, okay, I was looking at “ecological footprint” for my domain, but after doing some research with the keywords – and you can have access to the Google keyword tool – “eco-friendly products” now has two reasons. One, it’s getting more searches. Two, it is more likely to be searched for by somebody who wants to buy something. It, in one sense, prequalifies the person as a good, good prospect. They’re looking to buy.

One thing I want to point out is keyword search tools we give you – there’s two of them by Google – they give you different results.

The two from Google will give different results as far as number of searches per day or month, and you’ll see different results on the KeywordTracker.com free keyword tool.

What you want is a comparison value. And that’s really what you’re looking for, and you don’t want anything too low. I use the KeywordTracker.com free keyword tool for this purpose and put the cutoff for the number of searches at  somewhere around 60 to 70 per day for the keyword phrase for my target market unless you are doing something extremely focused with a high profit per sale item.

An outrageous example would be if you were selling Lear jets, not many searches, but if you were making thousands of dollars in profit from the sale, it would be okay.

So to give you a concrete number is difficult as far as is a search term really valid for you to focus your domain on as your main target market, 60 to 70 per day.

And you will be focusing your blog pages on long tail keyword phrases that might get as few as two, three, four, five, six, seven searches per day, or even not show up at all in a keyword tool search. But there’s a reason for that and I’m not going to get into that right now, that's for later.

But remember also, too, that you can get more ideas. Look at the Google one.

Click Here For The Main Google Free Keyword Tool

SCROLL DOWN all the way down to the "Related Words" on the page that is returned for the results of your keyword search, okay? You might see something that you feel will work better for you OR give you another idea

If You Have A Local Business Or Service
This Is Important On TWO Points!

Now, the last thing I want to mention is for those of you that already have a business.

If you already have a business, you might want to use your business name as your domain name. So if it’s Fred and Joe’s Concrete, you would use FredandJoesConcrete.com as your business name.

If you have a well-established business, you might have a little more money to work with because you can write it off as a business expense and that’ll save you 30% or whatever, but you could also have another website where you were focusing on keywords related to concrete.

But focusing on a business name OR your own name is what is known as "branding."

So if you already have an established business, you can use your business name as your domain name.

Location, Location, Location

The other thing I want to point out is that when you do this, let’s say Fred and Joe live in Mytown, Indiana. So I don't think that Fred and Joe are going to ship concrete to Portland, Oregon, all right? It just wouldn’t be cost effective for whoever is buying it because they have to pay a fortune for the transportation.

The same thing with the guy that had a knife sharpening business. If he lives in Boise, Idaho, I seriously doubt someone from south Florida is going to drop off their knives to be sharpened or that he is going to go all the way to south Florida to sharpen someone's knives.

Let’s say you have your own pizzeria, not necessarily a chain – even though you could use this with a chain.

Chain restaurants, even when you search MY CITY or MY TOWN and then the NAME OF PIZZA PLACE, they almost always put you at the corporate main website and you have to find the link to the 'Store Locator' and enter your zip code and see what comes up in their little result and click on a link to the closest place and by then you need to shave again, it took so long.

What You Want To Do If You Have A Local Business Or Service

If you have a local business or you offer a service that requires you to get somewhere or someone to get to you physically – you physically go somewhere or they bring something to you physically – again, the Concrete – you’re not sending concrete to somebody - Knife Sharpening – you’re going to sharpen somebody’s knives or they’re bringing knives to you - Pizza – they're coming to buy pizza or you’re going to delivering the pizza – you’re a local business, all right?

So What You Want To Do Is Get The Name Of Your City In The Domain

So you would look at, for example, KnifeSharpening.com, but you want to have it localized so you would look at KnifeSharpeningMyCity, or MyCityKnifeSharpening.com.

All right, the same way with something like pizza or concrete. It would be MyCityConcrete and then you could have ByFredandJoe, you know, or ConcreteMyCity, oe ConcreteNashvilleByFredandJoe, or NashvilleConcreteByFredandJoe or just NashvilleConcrete or ConcreteNashville, something like that – maybe you to make it even shorter and more keyword focused.

My point is that you put the city in the domain name because it’s very important when searching as many times people search MY CITY KNIFE SHARPENING or MY CITY CONCRETE or MY CITY PIZZA

The other way they do it is KNIFE SHARPENING MY CITY or CONCRETE MY CITY or PIZZA MY CITY

That's how I search and I get really irritated with Google giving me a pizzeria in San Diego. (No, I don't live anywhere near San Diego!)

If I’m searching for “knife sharpening,” and I want somebody to sharpen my knives, I don’t want to buy some little knife-sharpening gizmo – I’m going to type in “knife sharpening my city” or “my city knife sharpening.”

So if you’re a local business, you want to get your town or city’s name in there, and it's important to keep in mind when working with keyword phrases.

The only other thing I want to mention before I wrap this up is that when we talk about linking. If you’re going to have more than one main website. I’m not talking about remote sites now, but more than one main website. For example: You decide to get both KnifeSharpeningMyCity.com, and MyCityKnifeSharpening.com I would host them on different hosting companies.

I would want entirely different "IP Addresses for them. I won't get into a detail explanation here, but if you are planning on having more than one main website, host them with different companies. Google can tell and might devalue the sites as a spam ring if the content is not sufficiently different with IP Addresses that are similar. Basic explanation, but good enough for this section

And I would link one to the other one way. Just pick one as your main site or "Primary" site and make the other one a secondary site pointing to (linking to) the primary site

So I would use a separate host company. I do recommend HostGator and the reasons for that are listed below. The other three that I would recommend would be Hawkhost, Bluehost, and Dreamhost. They’re all well-established with good customer support.

And this has to do with the IP address and Google knowing, Google seeing if somebody is just trying to put up a bunch of different websites but they all belong to one person and they’re linking them together so that they can manipulate the search engine results.

And as you’ll see later on and you’ll hear me say Google knows as internet marketers we’re trying to manipulate the search results so we can be shown very high up in the search results they return,  ideally on the first page of the search results returned, which would mean a lot of people would see our site and click on it.

And that right there, with those three additional ones to HostGator; Hawkhost, Bluehost, Dreamhost that gives you four right there.

And then if you’re really trying to make those four sites work, you’ll be busy especially when working with remote sites and article directory sites and videos and press releases and keyword phrase optimization and every other marketing tactic that I'm going to explain to you.

Plus there are other hosting companies out there. But I do want to WARN YOU!

Make sure you see what you see for the control panel is very similar to these examples.

Click here for a screenshot of a good control panel (Hostgator)

PLEASE NOTE!!! If you go too cheap on your hosting, you will be really screwed in the long run. You need a good hosting control panel (cPanel) with things like "Fantastico," Subdomain creation with re-directs etc...

If you do not see something similar to these two control panels shown above, and most good hosting companies will have a "Demo" shot or a "Demo" of some type showing you what you get for a control panel, I strongly suggest you find another hosting company

If you go too cheap, it’s just not worth it, okay? You’re going to want the Fantastico and some other stuff. Even these major hosting companies I’m talking about, even paying month by month, it’s still only $7 or $8 or $9, a

But if you pay a year in advance, some are as low as about six bucks a month paying it advance with their coupon like HostGator. (And they always have a coupon code)

But my point here is that, if you go too cheap, you’re going to screw yourself, all right?

Your own domain with your own website looks so much more impressive to people searching the web for valid, valuable information on your topic.

They are much more likely to take you seriously and to trust you and transfer that trust to any product or services you link to, or sign up for your mailing list.

You also will look much more legitimate and rank better in search results when it comes to how the search engines will view you.

Don’t try to develop some weird website. I know there are hosting companies out there with so-called easy website start up design functions" that are harder than they look to understand. You can do that if you want, but stating with a blog is the best way.

You really don’t start with a free website, even though you actually could, it is just more difficult and they can shut you down for any reason they want and you can't do a thing about it!

I believe I’ve covered everything I wanted to cover as far as giving you additional information and insight into choosing a good domain name.

Once again, make sure that you’ve understand the concept of the "Hot Target Market" and you’ve picked a good target market that you feel will work for you.
